Tracking error

Tracking error — the gap between an index fund’s returns and its index’s returns. A well-run fund tracks tightly; persistent drift means hidden costs or sloppy replication. Together with the expense ratio it forms the complete quality spec of an index fund: cheap, and faithful. Everything else on the fact sheet is decoration.
